Not sure about the first part on EM By Medfbuddy on Sep 18, This is a well-written book that should be useful to both graduate students in physics, mathematics, and electrical engineering, and experienced practitioners in those fields. The first section of the book is logically organized from chapter to chapter, while the chapters of the second section are sufficiently independent to suit the needs of various computational researchers; of course, a thorough background and working facility with vector analysis and partial differential equations is necessary; this is not a book to read while strolling in central park or listening to iPod music; you will need pencil and paper, and a PC with V12 horse-power to navigate the pages of the second section of this book!
By Deskswirl on Jan 21, I predict that this will become the new standard for an entry-level graduate course in Electromagnetics. Overall my view of the book is favorable in that it provides a CONCISE note emphasis coverage of the material one needs to encounter at this level Uniqueness Theorem, Image Theory, Reciprocity, Equivalence Principle, Duality, Babinet's and an introduction to wave propagation in Anisotropic media , Bi-isotropic media and Metamaterials while still overviewing interfaces, transmission lines, and waveguides.
The problems are not overly difficult while still giving the reader issues to consider. In fact one could make the accusation that this textbook is just a much needed update of that classic, albeit dated text. I state this because of the similarity of the layout and arguments that Prof. Jin provides.
Thus when poorly worded, closed-mouth explanations were encountered it was quite easy to seek Harrington's explanation nearly always superior for enlightenment. The main argument for this book hinges upon it being a CONCISE now read short overview of material needed by graduate students in the electrical sciences. Choosing this textbook over Balanis' is certain to alleviate back pain and wrist ache while allowing you to become a serious participant in the fight against deforestation of the rainforest!
